Classroom management is essential to all standards. Without a workable classroom management plan, instructors lose valuable time attempting to regain control. Rules need to be created and enforced by the instructor but these rules need to be mindful of students’ needs and capabilities. Within my classroom, I include rules which are respectful of both students, instructors, and the community. Students are given clear, achievable expectations for behavior.
Classroom Rules
- Students are expected to be respectful to themselves, instructors, and other students.
- Students are expected to be responsible: this includes bringing materials to class as well as completing all assignments on-time.
- Students will be expected to try hard in class and complete every assignment to the best of their ability.
I found that having a Powerpoint presentation at the beginning of class was an invaluable tool for organizing the class. It allowed students to immediately know my expectations as well as the materials they would need and the behavior which was expected of them (for example, put away distractions such as cell phones). Below is an example of one opening Powerpoint presentation.
